The Bhagavadgita, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, A P J Abdul Kalam, Buddha, Eklavya, and Sarojini Naidu's life lessons will henceforth be required reading in Haryana's government schools as part of the value education curriculum for all grades above VI.
Students could ignore the state education department's 'Adarsh Jewan Mulye' books when value education was optional, but now they must read a new text to be able to answer 10-mark questions.

From December 18 to 22, the schools will receive three free books — one for each of the classes VI to VII, IX to X, and XI to XII.

The state government formed a 7-member committee led by the director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in August to rework value education in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. "The committee decided to include verses from the Bhagavadgita for their inspirational value in building moral character," an individual engaged in the new books said. Fearlessness, simplicity, discipline, politeness, determination, focus, hard effort, respect for nature, and the secrets to success can all be learned from spiritual texts."

The book for classes IX-X includes stories about Shivaji, Buddha, Ekalavya (from the Mahabharata), Sister Nivedita (Irish teacher and Swami Vivekananda student), and others.

Maitreyi (Indian philosopher of the later Vedic period in ancient India, named as the wife of the Vedic sage Yajnavalkya in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad).
